Fancy family outing here we go! Family was in town and Chicago speakeasy charmed into their hearts. My family that was visiting is very picky on their choices so this second time in a week for them was huge. Lucky i got to go. Lucky. ..1 cause I really like this place and 2 ..... I jokingly asked what the price of the crab was. Our waiter who was very funny and knowledgeable had just finished going over his favorite meals with us let me know the scary market price. "Who sets that market anyway? " Even with the sticker shock he said they have choice crab and totally worth it. To my extra shock my grandpa couldn't let me say no. I love crab. Being in the Midwest it's a treat when it's good. This was beyond good. I had gotten a glimpse at their crab back on a Valentine day visit but what was placed in front of me was to good to imagine. It was hotdog sized meat I extracted from the piping hot crustacean! For the price my grandpa got a dinner and a show as my tiny hands cracked and pulled every morsel of meat from that shell. Heaven. The food was heaven and of course the restaurant was great. Thank you for having that as an option. That is something I'll never forget.

I recently had the opportunity for dinner at this neat little steak house. I found the service to be excellent and the salad bar well above average. The prices are excellent for the quality of food. The bar was well stocked and the bartender was a great. I will come back again the next time I'm in Des Moines.

Chicago Speakeasy is awesome. I used to live in Des Moines 15 years ago and I was a regular here. I haven't been back in 15 years but it was worth the wait. Everything was amazing. From the prime rib to the cod to the salad bar oh my gosh the salad bar to the incredible service. The owner Ron was always making sure that you're having a good meal. Now his daughter Julie runs the place and she does the exact same thing. I guess world-class customer service runs in the family. Do yourself a favor go in and be prepared to be treated like family or maybe I should say better than family because sometimes family is not this fun!!! :-)

If you dig Salad bars this is the spot for you! It's all I ordered and all I needed! This is a rad older restaurant that puts you in the mindset of a gangster whose ready to smuggle some food into your belly! Awesome hot loaf of bread on the table to go with the salad bar, good drink selection, wonderful, weird interior makes you feel like your kinda in a scene from Twin Peaks or something. The location is a bit of a drive for us to make this a place a regular spot but, if your digging on a good all you can eat salad bar and you don't want it to cost a gazillion bucks this is a good spot to try! They also have steaks, pasta, and seafood and all meals come with that beautiful round salad bar! Score!

I went here for lunch with my co-workers from my internship. It was around 1 when we went here I believe. It was busy. We got seated fast & our waitress was friendly. She took our order but our food took awhile to come out. I order their meatball sub with fries, it was messy but delish. I'm glad they have a salad bar while we waited. The salad bar was good, I liked their macaroni & pasta salad. The cheese cubes were good too. By the time we got our food I wasn't that hungry anymore so I had to get a to go box.

Love this place! Prime rib and other entrees never disappoint. One bad thing tonight was the bread- not sure what happened but wow it was horrible today. Hoping just bad day??

This place seems like it has so much potential, but it perpetually seems to fall short, especially in food quality. While the salad bar is very well maintained and feature several tasty salads (such as the cottage cheese salad), the steaks seem to be of lackluster quality for a steakhouse at this price level. The menu totes the steaks as choice, but seem to be more of a 'prime' quality. My sirloin did not seem particularly tender. The mob atmosphere is interesting--it invokes a quiet environment and appears Chicago Speakeasy would be a nice place for an intimate date or a special night out. The service has always been pleasant and efficient. However, the quality of the steaks is curiously disappointing.

I can not get enough of this local hot spot its a must visit in my opinion, salad bar is great and there is usually a short weight because everybody loves this place. Always great service and I've never been disappointed in the home made food

Only giving it 3 stars and not 4 because I have not been able to get rare prime rib the last few times I've patroned them for lunch during their Monday prime rib special. The sliver of meat has been overcooked. Salad bar is awesome. That's the reason to go. Service is usually up to par.

Came here and really enjoyed the food. First off, the salad bar is as good as every other reviewer has mentioned. One of the best salad bars I've had at a restaurant! I definitely had a hard time deciding on what to order because everything sounded so good. I ordered the cheese balls as an appetizer and salmon as my entree with spaghetti as a side. The salmon was delicious and was a large generous portion. I would have to say it was a little on the oily side and I wish it was less oily. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed it. My friend had the prime rib which is what this place is known for her and it's really good here.

We came to Chicago Speakeasy after my Grandfather's funeral. This was his favorite restaurant in Des Moines. Our group was big and the staff was all ready for us with two huge tables set up for us in a quiet section of the restaurant. I felt a bit sorry for our waitress, because she seemed to be the only waitress on duty that day and we were about 25 people. The drink orders took a long time, but I won't fault her for that. But I was super impressed when the food came out. No one had to wait an eternity for their food while other people were digging in while the food was still hot. No one complained their food went cold. The salad bar was very good. Fresh with a lot of variety, and I was thrilled to see some pickled herring available. Nice Iowa touch. It was set up kind of weird. Shouldn't the dressing be placed after the lettuce and veggies? Just saying. But for some reason it felt strange to have to make the entire circle and come back in the end to put the dressing on my salad. I ordered the Iowa Pork Chop and it was delicious. And my steamed veggies were still hot when I was served my meal. When was the last time that actually happened?

Came here on a Saturday night with a group of close friends. We had a wonderful night with wonderful food. Almost every dish on the menu ranged around $20. Each dish comes with a salad bar. The salad bar had many options from lettuce/spinach to many types of pasta salad. They also had sweeter options: Oreo fluff. Afterwards they provide a fresh loaf of bread to tie you down before the actual meal. I had the seafood lasagna which was absolutely amazing. I would definitely buy this dish again. It came with a side of garlic bread which I was not partial too but my boyfriend enjoyed it. He ordered medium rare steak with a side of pasta. The steak was more on the rare side but it still tasted amazing. The staff was nice and friendly and the ambiance made us feel like we were in the prohibition era. It was a wonderful experience with great food. I recommend all Des Moines goers to come to this restaurant. It is a must!!!!

One of our favorite in Des Moines. Best salad bar around. Service is very good. An old style local neighborhood place. We always take friends who have never been here before and will return.

I don't mess around with this place I get the biggest cut of prime rib on the menu. Only $23 dollars! It is about a 3 to 3 1/2 inch thick cut of beef served with bread all you can eat salad bar and baked potato. Good service too!

Don't come here for steak or pasta. Prime rib and crab legs are what brings us back time after time. The fried chicken has been pretty good as well. They also have one of the best little salad bars in town with a great selection of always fresh items. The little loaf of bread always seems warm and is a nice starter even if the butter is too cold to spread. Service has room for improvement but our drinks were always full.

Prime rib had more gristle than most steaks I've had. Was not impressed at all. Service was good and salad bar was nice. But what we went for was prime rib and we were very disappointed. Tough and grisly! Go to embers instead. No prime rib but steaks that are more tender and better tasting.

My family and I love this place. Our servers are always super nice and attentive. I like the salad bar a lot. They have a variety of fresh food and everything is very very clean! I usually order the ruben sandwich and my mother orders the patti melt and we share. I gave this place 4 stars because the patti melt was super hot and had crispy toasted bread but the ruben was less warm and soggy on the bottom like it had been under the warmer a while. Not usually the case though. Like the atmosphere, makes me think I'm in some cool secret Chicago eatery.

Came here on last Monday night while in Des Moines for training. Several people who had been here before recommended the Prime Rib Special. You get a 8oz prime rib with au jus, choice of potato and their "famous" salad bar for $18. I wasn't overly impressed with the salad bar, but I'm not a huge salad guy so we shouldn't hold it against them. I would have liked it more if they had just plain lettuce, parm cheese, and that they label what everything was. Most importantly, I wish they had labeled the dressings. Anyway, I came for prime rib, not salad. I ordered my prime rib medium rare and I asked for mushrooms and onions on the side. While everything tasted delicious, my dinner was not hot. It wasn't outright cold, but it wasn't served hot. If I had my time back, I would have sent it back. To cap off the meal we headed back to the salad bar for dessert. Several who had been here before recommended the Oreo cookie and cream dessert. If it hadn't of been praised so much, I probably would have liked it more, but I think it was over - hyped. I was hoping for more from a mid - west steakhouse. While the dinner tasted delicious, I don't think there was much value for the price. I'd try and find a better establishment if you have choices.

First time here on a friend's recommendation. Hot beef sandwich was the special, so I got it. Very disappointed! Meat was tough and there was hardly any gravy on the sandwich. Portion seemed skimpy for the money. Salad bar was okay. No hurry to return.

I had the Steak de Burgo. The meat was tender and I would give it 5 stars if not for the excessive garlic. Too much for me.

Hmmm, visiting family in Des Moines and we decided to hit up Chicago Speakeasy. Overall not the best place nor the worst place I've been to but it seemed like it has so much potential. It was OK but I could have cooked a better steak myself using Walmart meat. The sides were blah, the kids liked the salad bar but at the end I didn't care for the bill charge given the quality of food. I wouldn't recommend this place as I'm sure there are other better steak places around.

My wife and I dined here tonight for the first time for a special occasion dinner. I had the NY strip and my wife had the tenderloin filets. Both steaks were very tender and cooked as ordered. The salad bar has a nice array of items and everything was fresh despite us arriving after 8PM. The service was attentive and quick. Chicago Speakeasy is a great spot for a nice dinner or even special occasion. We will definitely return. The only reason I gave 4 stars is the steak could be seasoned a little better, but it was nothing a little salt and A1 couldn't fix. Not a deal breaker at all.

We go here about once a week for lunch with the work crowd. It's not far from the office, and it's quick - we can get there, eat, pay and get back within an hour easily. I usually order the salad bar - it's quite filling, and for such a small space, it really does have a lot of variety. It's nothing too exotic, but it's always clean, fresh and full. I've never found a wilted piece of lettuce or a limp vegetable (although I do avoid the grape/cherry tomatoes, they always lack flavor). Occasionally I'll go for a sandwich - the club is tasty, as is the grilled cheese. All sandwiches come with their fries, which I find overly greasy. And fuhgettabowdit if you want to sub a side (i.e. a baked potato or vegetable) - they upcharge for everything. I do NOT recommend the soups - I have never been happy. I took the server's suggestion last week and ordered the Wisconsin cheese soup, which turned out to be essentially Cheez Whiz in a bowl. The service is good enough most days - I've never had outstanding service, but I've never had terrible service. If you go for lunch, get there early or go late, because anytime between 11:30 - 1 you'll be battling the blue hairs for a spot around the salad bar. I once had an 85 year old woman elbow her way in front of us so she could get more pickled herring. Bottom line - good place for lunch, sandwiches and salad bar are good stuff. I can't imagine coming here for a steak dinner, which I usually associate with a nicer restaurant - not one whose "featured" wine is Relax and who serves everything with a side of fries "fa free".

I must preface this with the fact I am from Southern California and LOVE steakhouses so when I asked around for a good steakhouse, this is the direction I was pointed. My rating reflects the service, taste of food and atmosphere- not actual experience. I remember going here when I was a kid. It was the first place I ever tasted a Long Island Iced Tea. We decided to go with wine this time, The selection was average but managed to do the trick. For our appetizer we ordered fried cheese and onion rings, neither of which impressed me. Neither did the fact that I asked for various dipping sauces at the time of ordering and they showed up after we finished the appetizers. Upon ordering our entree I asked if I could just have a House salad rather than go up to the salad bar and was denied. I have a firm belief that ALL restaurants should have a salad option outside of the salad bar which has been sitting out all day, being sneezed on and picked through with dirty hands. Then my steak arrived. I almost cried when I saw the long dark hair draped across it. I asked for a new one and settled in with my side of fettuccine alfredo while I waited and assessed what the other people in my party we eating. My alfredo reminded me of a Lean Cuisine so that lasted about one bite. I did try a piece of lobster and have no complaints there. Then my second steak arrived, which was average tasting until I found my second long hair in the steak juices, at which point I almost vomited and used the plate as a frisbee towards the back of the restaurant, crossing my fingers it would knock out our waitress, who actually had the nerve to ask me if I wanted another one. For a mid-west town I had much higher hopes on taste, enough to forgo the fine-dining experience I prefer at steakhouses.

I thought it was a bit overrated. I did like the salad bar, since the good seemed fresh and there was a good variety. I especially liked the cottage cheese salad with the green onion. My chicken alfredo was pretty good, but for a few bucks more I can get alfredo that will knock my socks off here in Cleveland. Bf thought his fried chicken was just so-so, maybe a little overdone. Others had steaks that looked decent and the loaded baked potatoes were tempting. I don't much remember the service, since I was with family I hadn't seen in awhile, so it must have been good enough. It won't be on the short list of places to go next time I'm in town, but I wouldn't turn down an invite.

We have been here twice and have been disappointed each time. The "greeter" has never been friendly. Never said "hi" or "welcome", just "how many?" and then expected us to know to follow her to be seated. The waitresses have been friendlier but service is kind of slow. I've tried the fettuccine Alfredo and it was bland and tasted like it was came out of the freezer. This last time I tried the ribs. They tasted like they had chili sauce spread on them. They were also very tough, over cooked and not much meat. My husband has gotten the prime rib each time. It has been cooked to his liking but kind of bland for prime rib. The baked potatoes we had were gritty and dry. The salad bar is nothing special. We have ordered the cheesecake before and it was ok but slices were very small for the price. It is not homemade and there is nothing special about it. Maybe I keep ordering the wrong things but I don't understand the high rating on this place.

My honey and I decided to drive across Douglas to Chicago Speakeasy when we saw the line at John & Nick's. I hadn't been here for years, so I was surprised that the different raised levels were now separated (you cannot see across the entire restaurant anymore). I liked that it seemed more intimate now and I think nice for a date night. Dress was casual and the service was great. The salad bar had a nice variety and was well kept up. I thought the bread brought to the table was tasteless, but my prime rib was just as expected. My honey got the ribs and we had a lot to take home. The recommended garlic mash was a disapointment. Tasted like some undercooked taters with no garlic to us. Might stop in for the salad bar again, or to try out the bar area which looked nice at the entry. We will let you know how it goes.

Chicago Speakeasy is a Des Moines classic - definitely a must if you are looking for a good steakhouse. Their steaks are really flavorful and cooked perfectly. Their salad bar makes every other salad bar look pitiful in comparison. They have tons of sides like coleslaw, potato salad, pasta salad, oreo cream dessert, apple salad, etc. And because I love me a good dessert option, I have to mention that there are so many dessert-type salads on the salad bar that you can go back again after your meal and get dessert.

I love the salad bar, if you like salad bars this is the king. It's awesome, I never thought I could like a place for it's salad bar, but I do and it's name is Chicago speak easy. Prime rib is some of the best in town, if not the best. I recommend fried chicken night. They serve it every night, but Thursday it is on special, and it is awesome. The maffioso homages is borderline cartoonish, and they had a picture of the sopranos, which has nothing to do with Chicago. It all works in sort of kitchy sort of way. Service is good, sometimes along wait on the weekend. It's worth it.

Have been here twice with family that lives in DSM; they love it quite a bit, and I find that I really like it, too. Or I should say 'we', as my hubby is quite the fan as well. If you are a salad bar lover, this place has a great one! The first time we came here, our server was very attentive and bubbly; the second time, she was nice enough, but not over enthusiastic. For a place that is not known for pasta, the spaghetti with marinara is very good. We will go back again, I'm sure.

This is a reasonably priced, general restaurant. The thing that sets it apart, in my opinion, is the salad bar. At first glace, you might be tempted to think that is isn't too special because it takes up a small number of square feet. Then you realize that is because of how it is organized. There a lot packed into that small space. Besides, it really is the quality of the items that I like, not just the quantity. Everything seems to be in good condition as opposed to some places where things look like they have been sitting for hours under a heat lamp. The reason for this is the attitude of the management. They make sure there is one or more staff that is constantly keeping things right. That attention to details shows. Not to take anything away from the food either. It is good quality and quantity for the price. The salad bar is just so above average that it detracts from the other good things about this place. The daily special is usually a good bet. It is the same thing each week for that particular day of the week. Regulars can then plain their visits far in advance :-) Usually very good service. Decent atmosphere too, especially after a somewhat recent remodel.
